Sensing applications

Quantum sensors exploit coherence, squeezing and entanglement to measure time, gravity, and magnetic or electric fields with exceptional precision: GPS-free navigation, geophysical mapping, medical imaging, timing, diagnostics, weak-field detection.

The quantum application that already ships

Sensing flips quantum computing's central problem into a product. Qubits are maddeningly sensitive to stray fields, temperature, vibration: terrible for computing, perfect for measuring. Build the same delicate quantum system, point it at the world instead of a calculation, and you get instruments of absurd precision: clocks, magnetometers, gravimeters, accelerometers.

This corner of quantum 2.0 is not a promise. Atomic clocks already run GPS; commercial quantum sensors are on the market today; and the research frontier keeps producing peer-reviewed firsts rather than press-release firsts.

Documented breakthroughs

Three that show the range. Underground mapping: in 2022, University of Birmingham researchers published in Nature the first outdoor detection of a buried structure (a utility tunnel) using a quantum gravity gradiometer, a step toward surveying without digging. Brain imaging: wearable magnetoencephalography helmets using optically pumped quantum magnetometers, demonstrated in Nature in 2018, measure brain activity while patients move freely: impossible with the room-sized traditional machines. Navigation without GPS: quantum magnetometers reading Earth's magnetic map offer un-jammable positioning; SandboxAQ's AQNav has been publicly tested with the US Air Force.

Medical imaging, mineral exploration, structural monitoring and defense navigation are the near-term markets. None require error-corrected quantum computers, which is exactly why sensing arrives first.

The honest caveat: The relevant metric is sensitivity under real operating conditions, not laboratory precision alone.

The technology behind these applications is covered on Quantum Sensing.
