Welcome! Let's shrink.

🍰🍰 🍰🍰 …millions more cuts… an atom! cut… cut… cut…

Take a chocolate cake. Cut it in half. Cut that half in half. Keep going… how long until you can't cut anymore?

Way, WAY longer than you'd think. You'd pass crumb, then speck, then dust. You'd still have millions of cuts to go before you hit the bottom.

Everything is made of pieces much smaller than you'd expect.

趣味小知识: If an apple were blown up to the size of Earth, its atoms would be about the size of the original apple.

The staircase of small

🧍🐜🦠 🧬 youant cellmoleculeatom each step down is a whole new world

Here's the zoom-out: you → an ant → a hair's width → a cell → a molecule → an atom. Each step down is a whole new world.

Atoms are so small that a single glass of water holds more molecules than there are glasses of water in all the oceans.

Inside an atom

nucleus electron electron photon (a piece of light)

Atoms aren't the bottom floor. Inside: a tiny, heavy center (the nucleus) with even tinier electrons buzzing around it.

And light comes in tiny pieces too, they're called photons. Electrons and photons are the main characters of this whole site.

So what does 'quantum' mean?

normal world: a ramp any height allowed quantum world: stairs steps only, no in-between ✗ can't stand here

'Quantum' literally means the smallest possible chunk of something.

Down at atom-size, energy doesn't flow smoothly like a ramp: it comes in steps, like a staircase. You can stand on step 1 or step 2, but never in between. That's the 'quantum' in quantum physics.

Quantum = the smallest chunk nature allows.

趣味小知识: The word comes from Latin 'quantus', 'how much?'

Why you should care

Down at that size, the normal rules stop working. Things can be in two states at once, act like waves, and stay weirdly linked across distances.

Those strange rules aren't just fun facts. They're being turned into new kinds of computers, uncrackable codes, and better medicines. That's the rest of this course.

Tiny things play by different rules, and those rules are useful.
