Let's bust the myth

STRONG AT · simulating molecules · best-combo searches · (someday) code-breaking NOT BUILT FOR · loading websites · running your games · email, spreadsheets, apps a specialist tool, not a better laptop

A quantum computer will not load websites faster, run games better, or replace your laptop. For everyday jobs it's WORSE: slower, colder, and absurdly expensive.

Quantum computers are specialists: potentially amazing at a few specific problem types, useless for most.

Quantum computers are specialists, not better laptops.

Sweet spot #1: nature itself

Molecules ARE quantum: their electrons blend and interfere all day long. Regular computers choke trying to simulate them; the possibilities explode.

A quantum computer speaks the molecule's native language. The hopes: better batteries, new medicines, and fertilizer made with far less energy.

Le savais-tu ?: Physicist Richard Feynman launched the whole field in 1981 by arguing that to simulate nature properly, you need a quantum machine.

Sweet spot #2: needle in a haystack

Some problems are 'find the best combo among zillions': delivery routes, factory schedules, portfolio mixes, code-breaking.

Quantum computers can sometimes cut through these. Shor's factoring is the famous one, and Grover's algorithm gives searching a genuine (if smaller) boost.

Where we actually are

Today is the noisy era: machines with hundreds of noisy qubits that can't yet beat regular computers at anything USEFUL: only at carefully chosen demo problems.

The finish line everyone's racing toward: fault-tolerant machines whose reliable logical qubits can run long programs. Serious estimates for 'useful' range from a few years to a few decades: anyone claiming certainty is selling something.

Impressive demos: yes. Useful beyond regular computers: not yet.

Recap

Not a faster laptop, a specialist.

Great at: simulating molecules and materials, some search-and-optimize problems, someday code-breaking.

Today: noisy demos. The useful era is coming, but its timing is genuinely uncertain.

You now understand quantum computers better than most headlines do. Final test!

Mini quiz: Good At, Bad At

5 questions : tirées à nouveau de la banque à chaque tentative. Note de passage : 60 %. Reprises illimitées.
