Where the money flows

GOVERNMENTS VENTURE CAPITAL PUBLIC MARKETS tens of billions, steady startups, high risk a few wild pure-plays THE QUANTUM FIELD we explain the rivers; we never tell you to swim (no investment advice, ever)

Three rivers of money feed quantum: government programs (biggest and steadiest), venture capital into startups, and the stock market. A handful of pure quantum companies plus giants like IBM, Alphabet, Microsoft and Nvidia with quantum arms.

One thing to be clear about: this site explains the landscape. It never recommends investments: we're a classroom, not a broker.

The pure-play rollercoaster

Pure quantum stocks (IonQ, Rigetti, D-Wave, Quantum Computing Inc. and others) are famously wild. They can double or halve on a single announcement, because revenues are small and the value is mostly future promise.

In early 2025, one tech CEO's remark that truly useful quantum computers might be decades away knocked billions off the whole sector in a day. Later, friendlier comments brought much of it back.

Quantum stocks trade on stories about the future, and that cuts both ways.

How grown-ups size the field

Analysts at firms like McKinsey and BCG estimate quantum technology could create hundreds of billions to a trillion-plus dollars of value by around 2035–2040. Mostly captured by industries USING quantum (chemistry, pharma, finance, logistics), not only by whoever sells the machines.

History rhymes: in most tech waves, the users of a technology captured more value than the toolmakers.

The already-real story: new locks

Whatever quantum computing's timeline, one shift is funded and mandatory TODAY: post-quantum cryptography: replacing the internet's current locks with quantum-proof ones. The US standards agency NIST published the first official standards in 2024.

Every bank, government and app eventually migrates. That's quantum reshaping money before a single truly useful quantum computer exists.

Fun fact: The threat even has a name: 'harvest now, decrypt later'. Stealing encrypted data today and hoping a future quantum machine unlocks it.

Recap + the golden rule

Money flows in via governments, venture capital and public markets: with wild pure-play swings.

Analysts expect most value to land with quantum USERS: medicine, materials, finance, logistics.

Post-quantum cryptography is the quantum money story that's already real.

Golden rule: understand deeply, verify claims, and raise an eyebrow at every 'quantum will change everything next year' headline. This site teaches, it never advises. Final test!

Mini quiz: Following the Quantum Money

5 questions: drawn fresh from the bank every attempt. Pass mark 60%. Unlimited retakes.
