1. Who's building this?
Tech giants: IBM and Google build superconducting chips; Microsoft bets on exotic 'topological' qubits; Amazon and Nvidia push quantum cloud access and software.
Specialists: IonQ and Quantinuum (trapped ions), Rigetti and D-Wave (public quantum companies), PsiQuantum and Xanadu (photons): plus hundreds of startups worldwide.
2. Countries are racing too
Governments treat quantum like a space race: the US National Quantum Initiative, the EU's Quantum Flagship, and major programs in China, the UK, Canada, Japan and Australia.
Worldwide government commitments add up to tens of billions of dollars. Nobody wants to be the country that missed it.
China built a roughly 2,000-km quantum-secured communication backbone between Beijing and Shanghai: plus a quantum satellite named Micius.
3. What are they racing FOR?
Three prizes. Quantum computing, the big one. Quantum communication: links where physics itself sounds the alarm if anyone eavesdrops. Quantum sensing: measuring gravity, magnetic fields and time absurdly well.
Sensing is quietly first to market: quantum sensors and clocks are already sold commercially today.
4. Milestones vs hype
Real milestones to watch: error-corrected logical qubits improving (this era began around 2023–2024), quantum simulations of real chemistry rivaling classical methods, and quantum-secured networks growing.
Hype to ignore: raw 'X qubits!' headlines (counts mean little without quality) and anyone promising quantum-everything next year.
Count logical qubits and solved problems, not press releases.
5. Recap
Giants + specialists + national programs, everyone's in.
Three fields: computing, communication, sensing (sensing ships first).
Judge progress by error-corrected qubits and real problems solved, not qubit-count headlines. Quiz!
