“We have more qubits.”What are the fidelities, connectivity, circuit depth, uptime, and logical performance?
“Quantum evaluates every answer at once.”How does the algorithm use interference to extract the desired property?
“We achieved quantum advantage.”Against which classical algorithm, hardware, accuracy target, and cost?
“This problem is impossible classically.”Is exact solution required, or do approximation and heuristics work?
“Commercially useful within a few years.”What technical milestones and customer workflow dependencies must occur?
“Quantum will optimize everything.”Which problem structure, encoding, constraints, and objective are being used?
“Error correction is solved.”Has logical error decreased as code size increased, and at what overhead?

The five-part diligence framework

  1. Problem: Is the target economically important and mathematically well-defined?
  2. Algorithm: Is there a credible quantum algorithm with a meaningful theoretical or empirical advantage?
  3. Hardware: Can the required qubit count, fidelity, connectivity, and depth be achieved?
  4. End-to-end workflow: Do data preparation, classical processing, repetitions, and output extraction preserve the advantage?
  5. Economics: Is the solution better on cost, speed, quality, energy, or strategic value than classical alternatives?

A promising algorithm is not a viable product until it survives all five. The most common failure points are the fourth and fifth: an elegant quantum subroutine whose data loading, repetitions and output extraction quietly erase the advantage, or whose end-to-end economics lose to a GPU.

The two advantages people conflate

Advantage on a contrived benchmark (a sampling task designed to be hard classically) demonstrates hardware control and is a real milestone. Advantage on a problem someone will pay to solve is a different, much higher bar that no machine has cleanly met. The conflation of these two is the field's dominant error, and this site refuses to make it: every capability claim here is read against the best end-to-end classical alternative.
